Christmas trees:
a holiday tradition

live tree

Autumn is the best time to add a new tree to your landscape, and Lavalette Nursery will reward you for doing so. If you buy a tree for more than $98, you’ll receive a coupon for $25 off the purchase of a fresh-cut Christmas tree. Stop by and choose from Lavalette’s large selection of ornamental dogwoods and pears or select a specimen evergreen holly or a beautiful shade tree. Lavalette has extended hours during the holiday season -- 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

More than any other holiday, Christmas evokes feelings of nostalgia. Many families follow traditions handed down through generations, and one of those traditions is decorating a fresh-cut tree. There’s just nothing like having a real tree in the house.

Lavalette Nursery has a large selection of beautiful Fraser fir cut trees, which can be flocked if you prefer a snow-covered look. These fresh-cut trees from North Carolina are 6 to 9 feet tall.

Also, as we have done in the past, a portion of the purchase price of every tree will go to a local non-profit charity. This year it is the Golden Girl Group Home in Ceredo. This is a great organization that helps troubled teen-age girls. Check them out at www.gggh.org.

Fraser fir, the most popular Christmas tree, was named for John Fraser, a Scot botanist who explored the southern Appalachian Mountains in the late 18th century. Fraser fir is a uniformly pyramid-shaped tree with strong branches cut treesthat are turned slightly upward -- making them perfect for hanging ornaments. Also available for your cut tree is Tree wreathMoist Christmas Tree Granules, which stores water and reduces the frequency of watering a cut tree.

As always, the staff at Lavalette Nursery will deliver your chosen tree and set it up in your house if you live nearby. For questions about this service, call (304) 523-8491.

flockedLive trees offered at Lavalette Nursery are Norway spruce, white pine and small blue spruce. These are balled in burlap, ready to be taken inside for a few days around Christmas and then planted in your landscape. For information about how to care for your live Christmas tree, click here.

Also available again this year is a wide selection of wreaths and garlands for all your indoor and outdoor decorating needs. Custom wreaths can be designed in a variety of sizes and adorned with pine cones and ribbons.

The garden center is located at 1601 5th St. -- at the top of 5th Street Hill. For more information, call (304) 523-8491.
