 March
1st is the unofficial start of Spring for us at Lavalette Nursery.
It just seems like that is when people naturally start thinking
about plants and what needs to be done to them. It's also the time
when wholesale nurseries that we buy plants from start calling us
and ask when they can deliver our order. So even though your calendar
says the first day of Spring is March 20, go ahead and pretend like
it starts March 1st even if it's 30 degrees and snowing.
We've already
had numerous phone calls asking about moles. Huge mounds of dirt
appear seemingly over night. Soft squishy ridges seem to swallow
up your feet when you
walk across the lawn. It's maddening. Try some our new mole repellant,
"Moletox" baited gel. Mole traps made especially for moles
work good too. Just be patient. Using An insecticide on the entire
lawn that kills grubs may help, but the main food for the moles
is earthworms.
There
are always pond questions early in the Spring also. People tend
to forget about their pond over the Winter, which is understandable.
If you didn't use a pond heater or use your pump to agitate the
surface of the water, your water garden has been an ice stating
rink all Winter. Now all of that stuff ( fish excrement, leaves,
etc) that has been stored in the cold pond all Winter has had time
to be converted into "fertilizer". Your pond plants have
been dormant all Winter, so when it warms up a little, the opportunistic
algae appears. It uses this fertilizer to grow geometrically. This
is the peas soup that causes people to go crazy. Let the algae grow,
multiply and eventually starve itself to death. Now clean up the
dead algae from the bottom and remove no more than one third of
the pond water. Use Microbe-Lift with
the new water you put in. Be patient. Let nature take it's course
and you'll have a balanced pond.
New plants and
products are arriving weekly now, so stop
out and see what's new. We'll be here.
