Woody Plant Guide

This is a listing of most of the standard varieties of shrubs, evergreens and trees that we have in stock most of the year. Our inventory is always changing. We try to keep a wide variety of plants in different sizes. Some of these may not be on this list. Refer to our price list for size and price. We will be happy to special order plants whenever possible. Container-grown plants are available year round, balled-and-burlapped are usually available only in the spring or fall.

Broadleaf evergreens

Most varieties are in 2- or 3-gallon pots. Larger ones are in 5- or 7-gallon pots or B&B.

  • Holly: China Girl, Blue Holly, Green Luster Holly, Inkberry Holly, dwarf Japanese types (Heller, etc ), tall tree types (Foster, Greenleaf, Patriot , etc)
  • Boxwood: Korean various hybrids), American boxwood
  • Euonymus: Manhattan, Gaiety, Emerald and Gold, Moon shadow
  • Misc: CoralBeauty, Cotoneaster, Acuba, Nandina, Mahonia, Leucothoe, Pyracantha, Pieris, Cherry Laurel

Evergreen Azaleas: Most varieties are in 1-, 2- or 3-gallon pots.

  • Red: Girard Crimson, Hino Crimson, Hershey, Hot Shot, Stewartsonian
  • Pink: Girard Fushia, Karen, Rosebud, Korean
  • White: Deleware Valley, Girard Pleasant White

Rhododendrons: Mainly in 3- or 5-gallon pots. Larger sizes from Oregon are B&B 18-24 inches and 24-30 inches

  • Red: Nova Zembla, America, Rocket
  • Pink: English Roseum, Roseum Elegans, Roseum Pink
  • Purple: Purple Elegans, Purple Passion, Anah Kruschke, Lee's Dark Purple
  • White: Chionoides, Album

Yews: Mainly B&B, 15-18 inches and 18-24 inches. Some sizes in 2-, 3- and 5-gallons

  • Spreading: Densiformis
  • Upright: Hicks

Junipers: Most varieties are in 1-, 2- or 3-gallon pots. Upright types are in 5- or 7-gallon pots

  • Low groundcover types: Blue rug, Pacific, Procumbens Nana, Sargent, etc.
  • Dwarf mounding types: Blue star, San Jose, etc.
  • Spreading: Gold Star, Sea Green, Dwarf Pfitzer
  • Upright: Hetz Column, Spartan, Wichita Blue, Robusta

Dwarf Evergreens: Smaller types in 1- or 2-gallon pots. Medium to large types in 3- or 5-gallon pots. Large specimens are B&B.

  • Chamaecyparis (false cypress): Gold Mop, Hinoki, Boulevard, many other varieties
  • Spruce: Bird Nest, Dwarf Alberta, Dwarf Globe Blue Spruce, Weeping Norway
  • Pine: Mugo, Weeping White Pine
  • Arborvitae: Hetz Midget, Rheingold

Upright Evergreens: Mainly in 5- or 7-gallon pots. Larger sizes are B&B.

  • Arborvitae: Emerald Green, Giant Western, American
  • Juniper: Hetz Column, Spartan, Wichita Blue, Robusta
  • Cypress: Leyland, Emerald Isle, Weeping Nootkatensis
  • Cryptomeria: Yoshino Cedar
  • Misc.: Dawn Redwood, Bald Cypress, Larch (note: these three are deciduous), Blue Atlas Cedar

Hemlocks: Mainly B&B. Smaller plants in 3- or 5-gallon pots. Seedlings also available.

  • Tall: Canadian
  • Weeping: Sargents

Pines: Mainly B&B. Smaller plants in 3- or 5-gallon pots. Seedlings also available.
White, Austrian

Spruce: Mainly B&B. Smaller plants in 3- or 5-gallon pots. Seedlings also available.
Norway, Serbian, Colorado, Blue hybrids


Flowering Shrubs

Dwarfs in 1- or 2-gallon pots. Regular varieties in 3- or 5-gallon pots. Larger sizes are B&B.

  • Azaleas: Exbury hybrids, all colors
  • Barberry: Crimson Pigmy, Rose Glow, Gold, other hybrids
  • Burning Bush: Compactus
  • Butterfly Bush: white, pink, red, blue, purple
  • Caryopteris: blue
  • Clethra: white, pink, dwarf pink
  • Cotoneaster: Apiculata, Horizontalis, other hybrids
  • Dogwood: Red Twig, Yellow Twig
  • Forsythia: Spring Glory
  • Holly: Winterberry
  • Hydrangea: large selection of colors and types. Lacecaps, snowballs, oakleaf, PeeGee, other hybrids
  • Itea: Henry's Garnett
  • Lilac: French hybrids (most colors), Dwarf Miss Kim, Korean
  • Mock Orange: white
  • Plum: Cistina
  • Privet: Vicary, California, Regal (available in bare root for hedges)
  • Rose: large selection of colors in shrub and landscape roses. See rose list
  • Rose of Sharon: Most colors available
  • Spirea: Little Princess, Goldmound, Neon Flash, Shirobana, Snowmound, others
  • Viburnum: Burkwood, Korean Spice, Mohican, Winterthur, Snowball, Doublefile, Summer Snowflake, Cranberry
  • Weigela: Wine and Roses, Red Prince
  • Willow: Dappled, Dwarf Blue

Flowering Trees

Smaller ones in 5- or 7-gallon pots. Mid-sized in 15- 25-gallon pots. Larger sizes are B&B.

  • Cherry: Pink Weeping, White Weeping (snow fountain), Kwansan (pink), Yoshino (light pink)
  • Crabapple: Indian magic (dark pink), Indian Summer (red), Prairifire (pink/red), Sargent (white), Spring Snow (white), Zumi (white)
  • Crape Myrtle: white, pink, red, lavender. Some types are large shrubs.
  • Dogwood: Cherokee Princess (white), Cherokee Brave (red), Rubra (pink), Kousa (late white), various hybrids
  • Golden Rain Tree: yellow
  • Hawthorn: Winter King (white), Thornless (white), Washington (white)
  • Japanese Maples: upright hybrids, weeping hybrids, green leaf, red leaf, etc.
  • Magnolia: Southern hybrids (white, evergreen), Sweetbay (white, semievergreen), Star(white), Saucer hybrids (white/pink)
  • Pagoda Tree: white
  • Pear: Cleveland Select (white)
  • Plum: Thundercloud, Newport (light pink, purple leaf)
  • Redbud: lavender pink, Forest Pansy (lavender, purple leaf), Whitebud (white)
  • Sourwood: (white)
  • White Fringe Tree: white

Large Trees

Smaller ones in 5- or 7-gallon pots. Mid-sized in 15- to 25-gallon containers. Larger sizes are B&B.

  • Ash: Seedless types. Marshall, Patmore
  • Birch: Clump types. River (creamy bark), Jacquemontii (white bark), other hybrids.
  • Black Gum: red fall color
  • Maple: Autumn Blaze, Red Sunset, October Glory, Sugar
  • Oak: Pin, Willow, Red
  • Sweet Gum: yellow fall color
  • Willow: weeping hybrids

Fruit Trees

Semi dwarf varieties in 5- or 7-gallon pots.

  • Apples: Red Delicious, Yellow Delicious, Granny Smith, Gala, Fugi, other hybrids
  • Peach: Elberta, Georgia Belle
  • Cherry: Montmorency, North Star
  • Pear: Bartlett, other hybrids
  • Plum: Stanley, other hybrids
