Pine Needle Mulch
We
all know by now how important mulch is to our gardens -- it prevents
weeds, slows evaporation, reduces erosion and protects plant roots
by preventing sudden temperature changes in the soil. And if you
use a natural mulch, the organic material slowly decomposes and
enriches the soil.
In extremely
dry seasons, mulch can make the difference between your plants'
survival and the risk of them withering. One of the best organic
mulches is our featured product -- pine needles.
Sometimes called
pine straw mulch, this is extremely popular with our Southern neighbors,
who just rake up a plentiful supply under their long-needle pines.
Fortunately for us, some Southern companies are in the business
of raising long-needle pines and sending their fallen needles up
to us.
Pine
needle mulch has all the benefits of other types of mulch, and a
few more. It lasts longer than bark mulches and stays in place.
And it remains attractive throughout the season. Pine needle mulch
can be used any place other mulch is used, but is particularly good
for plants that like acidic soils, like azaleas and rhododendrons.
Lavalette Nursery has a large supply of pine straw bales and our
helpful staff can help you decide how many bales you'll need to
cover your ground. Just bring in the measurements and we'll do the
figuring.
If you prefer
the more traditional types of mulch like bark chips, you'll find
plenty of choices at Lavalette. If you're unsure which type is best
for your needs, the friendly staff will be glad to make recommendations.
