Plant:
Pieris japonica
This
little-known shrub would be as popular as old favorites like azaleas
and hydrangeas if more people realized how stunningly beautiful
it is. And that's why we've chosen Pieris japonica as our featured
plant.
This large evergreen
shrub features glossy attractive foliage but the real show-stoppers
are the large clusters of fragrant white flowers in early spring.
The clusters of small white flowers can be 3 to 6 inches long. Before
blooming in March and April, the naked reddish flower buds are present
through fall and winter.
The shrub can
reach 6 to 8 feet tall, with slightly narrower spread, but has a
slow growth rate. Emerging foliage is an attractive reddish color.
This plant is excellent as a foundation plant or in a shrub border
or incorporated with other evergreens. And
it's an excellent choice for those in rural areas because it is
deer resistant.
Pieris
japonica prefers a moist, well-drained, cool acidic soil. It prefers
partial shade but can tolerate full sun. Avoid harsh, windswept
locations, however.
