Norway Spruce has a lovely conical shape that requires little or no pruning.
Attractive, majestic and easy to care for, Norway spruce is the perfect choice for those looking for a fast-growing tree to beautify their landscape all year long.

spruceGive the tree plenty of room to spread out. The Norway Spruce can grow to Christmas tree height in three years. A mature tree stands 60 to 100 feet tall with a spread of 25 to 40 feet. They are strong enough to stand up to high winds, snow and ice, thrive in a variety of different soils, hold their needles for up to 10 years and grow fast, at a rate of two to three feet per year.

This is the fastest-growing of the spruces and a row of them is an ideal windbreaker. This dense tree easily blocks out wind and neighbors, so it is ideal for use as a privacy barrier or wind screen. For a solid green privacy or wind screen, plant one every 8 to 10 feet.

Norway Spruce is just the thing if you are looking for a large, hardy tree for your landscape. It’s a beautiful specimen tree that attracts and creates a safe haven for wildlife.

It’s drought tolerant and is believed to be the most cold-hardy spruce available. Also, the Norway Spruce is the most disease resistant spruce you can find. Any serious disease or insect problems that kill other spruce trees do not affect the Norway Spruce.

Choosing a good location for your Norway Spruce is key, since it will be there for 100 years or more. Choose a planting spot with plenty of clearance from buildings, power lines and other trees. Norway Spruce trees prefer full sun, and while they can tolerate different poor soil, they prefer rich, moist soil.

To plant, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Carefully loosen the roots with your fingers as you place your tree in the hole. Backfill with soil, and water deeply. Put a layer of mulch around the tree to help retain moisture and control weeds. Keep your young Norway Spruce watered well for the first few years. After it is established, it will still require supplemental watering when conditions are especially dry.

The Norway Spruce can grow 2 to 3 feet per year their first 25 years under good conditions. In heavy or poor soils, they may average 1 foot per year.

Although they do best in full sunshine they can tolerate some shade, but the growth rate and density will be reduced. The Norway spruce has a deep spreading root system that makes this tree able to withstand winds up to 100 mph.

It is native to central and northern Europe including Norway, for which it is named, and prefers moist, cool climates. Once established, it thrives under seasonal drought and tolerates city pollution. Its only requirement is to not be sited in wet soils, where it will quickly die.
