Maiden Grass: Beautiful Ornamental
A tall clump of ornamental grass, gently waving in the breeze, is a stunning focal point for any garden, and maiden grass is one of the most beautiful.

It can reach 6 to 8 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, with silvery white blooms in late summer. Its smaller cousin, dwarf maiden grass, gets only 3 to 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Both are deer resistant.

At left is a beautiful example of a mature maiden grass which you can see next to the large "Welcome to Huntington" sign on the edge of Lavalette Nursery at 5th Street Hill.

For a different look, try porcupine grass, seen at right. This tight upright grass features stiff leaves resembling porcupine quills. The foliage has yellow horizontal stripes, much like zebra grass. In the fall, the leaves turn a beautiful coppery color. This grass gets 4 to 6 feet tall and 2 feet wide and is also deer resistant.
