Plant:
Lamiastrum
This
beautiful silver and green groundcover is the featured plant at
Lavalette Nursery and Garden Center this summer. It’s the
perfect low-maintenance plant for a problem area.
Variegated
Lamiastrum thrives in well-drained but moisture-retentive soil in
partial to full shade. It grows well in most soils and will reach
9 to 15 inches tall. It will spread faster in fertile soils. This
spreading plant trails on the ground with long stems which root
as they come in contact with the soil.
This
is a perfect perennial groundcover for shaded sites. Unlike ivy,
it will not choke out other perennials, so you can plant hostas
or ferns in the same bed. To keep the plant in a neat form, cut
it back to 6 to 8 inches after the summertime yellow flower fade.
Unlike ivy, it is easy to keep in check -- just pull it up by hand
if it spreads into areas it’s not welcome.
Mark Springer
likes Lamiastrum so much he’s planted it in Lavalette’s
display garden. Stop by the garden center and take a look.
Common names
for this semi-evergreen plant are Silverfrost, Golden Dead Nettle
and Yellow Archangel. Its leaves are aromatic when crushed.
