Plant:
Double Knock Out Rose
If
you were among the many who purchased the new Knock Out roses last
year, you were surely the envy of your friends and neighbors. As
you found out, these roses knock themselves out blooming all summer.
And everyone who sees them is knocked out by their beauty.
Just when you thought
this rose was perfection, its growers have outdone themselves by
producing a double variety whose blooms are a beautiful shade of
red.
This plant has every
characteristic that made Knock Out so popular throughout the country.
The only difference is the beautiful double bloom. An abundance
of small, almost miniature double blooms begin in the spring and
continue until the first hard frost. With a slightly smaller and
denser growth habit than Knock Out, it is perfect for small gardens
and containers.
These roses have glossy
green foliage and get about 3 to 4 feet tall. They have excellent
resistance to insects and black spot and other diseases and are
hardy to Zone 4. (We’re in Zone 6, so they can easily survive
the coldest winter we’ve ever had.) They will prosper in full
sun to partial shade.
 The
original Knock Out roses are still available, in shades of red and
pink. The Double Knock Out roses produce blooms of shiny fire engine
red about 2 1/2 inches wide. But don’t let the small blooms
fool you -- they make up for their size in abundance. The additional
petals present a fuller, richer cherry red inflorescence that is
simply breathtaking.
Without dead-heading,
the blooms maintain a continuous show of color from early June to
hard frost with beautiful foliage almost year-round. The new growth
is a dramatic burgundy red. The season-ending color is exceptional
with its rich burgundy leaves in the fall and its bright orange-red
hips to add color to the winter months.
Double Knock Out will
be a spectacular addition to every garden. Along with the eye-catching
blooms and superior performance, it offers wonderful versatility
of use. Plant one by itself as a focal point, add several among
your favorite perennials, or plant them as a stunningly colorful
hedge.
